The epic migration of Southern Right Whales to the Head of Bight in the Eyre Peninsula’s far west is a sight to behold, which is why we've dedicated a whole blog to it!
As another one of our incredible wildlife experiences, this is one not to be missed.
The Head of Bight on the Nullarbor is around 3.5-4 hours from Ceduna, and the viewing area is signposted along the highway.
These whales take up residence from June to October to give birth, and at the height of the season between July and August you can find up to 100 whales in the area at a time!
The view from the Bunda Cliffs is spectacular, and it’s an excellent activity for the kids with a number of display boards in the picnic area providing educational information on the Southern Right Whale.
You can also see if they can spot the different ‘whale moves’: do you know what lobtailing, breaching and spy-hopping are? (We recommend you get the kids to google this to keep them busy.)
Boardwalks on the clifftop take visitors to two main viewing areas – one east and one west – and the ramps are sloped for wheelchair access.
The whales mate and calve in the waters, or if you’re early in the season you can watch as they arrive from Antarctica with humpback whales.
Tickets to the Head of Bight during the whale season are just $16 for an adult, and $7 for children aged 5-15 (a family pass of two adults and two children is $36).
Seniors card holders can also get tickets for $13.
Aside from the Head of Bight, you can also book tours to get a different view of these magnificent creatures – whether you fancy being on the water, up in the air or simply want a catered experience with a tour guide, there are plenty of options.
The Eyre Peninsula is a hotspot for animal activities and interactions, and the opportunity to watch from the cliffs as whales (and their babies! Little whales!) frolic in the ocean below is one we wholeheartedly recommend.
After all it’s not every day you see whales, and definitely not in that number!
