No, the Eyre Peninsula isn’t just a summer destination!
There’s plenty to do on the EP this winter, so we’ve created a list to whet your travel appetite and get you planning.
1. It’s a great time of year to head inland to the Gawler Ranges National Park and beyond!
The cool weather means you can not only have a campfire (remembering to bring the wood with you from outside the park), but the park is green and beautiful as well as abundant with wildlife.
We’ve also been told by an expert that this winter will be one of the best seasons for 20 years!
Enter the park through one of the gateways (Wudinna, Kimba, Minnipa or Poochera) or take a tour with Gawler Ranges Wilderness Safaris.
2. Go whale watching!
You can spot Southern Right Whales in their annual migration to the Head of Bight on the Nullarbor, where they nurse their young in a very, very big creche.
Take a whale watching tour with EP Cruises (boat and kayak tours) or Chinta Air (plane) or view them from land. The Head of Bight has a viewing platform, and you can also spot them passing by Sleaford near Port Lincoln.
3. Camp at Mikkira Station among the koalas!
Winter is the only time you can camp out at Mikirra Station near Port Lincoln, which is closed for camping in the other months.
Mikirra is home to a colony of koalas that live in the manna gum trees on the property, and it’s also a great birdwatching and picnic location.
Contact the Port Lincoln Visitor Centre for a permit and key to enter.
4. Go fishing!
Did you know King George Whiting are in their prime at this time of year?
There are plenty of places to throw a line in, and winter is a less crowded time of year to visit.
5. And on that… compete in the Australian Salmon Fishing Championship around Elliston!
To be eligible to win the competition, you’ll need a ticket to enter before you catch your fish (no cheating) and you must catch it from the beach between Sheringa Beach and Mount Camel.
There are cash prizes available, but the competition only runs until 31 August!
6. Try the local oysters!
Oysters are also in their prime in winter.
Cowell, Coffin Bay, Streaky Bay and Smoky Bay are all oyster growing locations, and you can also take an oyster tour out of Coffin or Smoky!
7. Swim with the cuttlefish!
Giant Cuttlefish flock to the waters off Whyalla in winter to mate, and their ever-changing colours are just beautiful to observe!
Get your feet wet and swim amongst them (remembering to keep an appropriate distance as they are wild animals) or keep dry and take a glass bottom boat tour instead with Cutty’s Tours.
8. Dine in or enjoy a wine tasting!
Keep warm by indulging in a delicious snack or a local beverage, whether it’s a coffee, wine (tasting anyone?), beer or spirits.
It’ll be just the thing after a big day exploring.
