You’ve probably already guessed this from our website, but the Eyre Peninsula has plenty of opportunity for getting off the beaten track – whether that’s a beach drive or exploring the rocky ranges and rough dirt roads.
For the 4WD-enthusiasts, this makes us an ideal destination to really put your vehicle through its paces.
You can start by tackling the ranges of Darke Peake near the township of Cleve, where you’re in easy reach of the local pub (a real classic).
The Dark Peake range boasts the highest point on the Eyre Peninsula, Carappee Hill (489m above sea level), which also has a variety of bush trails and areas to camp.
For those looking to escape further, Googs Track in the west runs from Ceduna all the way to Glendambo with more than 300 sand dunes along the way making it an excellent 4WD experience – or maybe not so excellent if you get bogged.
Travel from south to north, and though it’s just under 200km in total you might find you spend more time on the track than you’d think, with lots to see along the way.
We recommend you take this track in the cooler months and take plenty of water and a satellite phone.
It’s a real off-road experience!
The Gawler Ranges also offer plenty of opportunities to get into 4WD mode, and you can choose your route depending on your skills level.
Kimba, Wudinna, Minnipa and Wirrulla are all gateways to this spectacular national park, where you’re guaranteed to spot plenty of wildlife.

Finally, you can’t mention 4WD on the Eyre Peninsula without considering some of our amazing drive-on beaches.
From Walker’s Rocks near Elliston, which is kilometres of sandy white beach to Scott’s Beach in the far west near Fowler’s Bay and the Gunyah Beach 4WD Track in the Coffin Bay National Park, there’s plenty to choose from.
Just be sure not to get bogged – though if you do get caught out, the locals will help you out (if you don’t have the beach all to yourself, of course).
The Eyre Peninsula is a perfect 4WD getaway, with various terrains to explore and friendly towns to visit along the way.
